Cycling Out Autism presented by Tampa Interbay Rotary

» Welcome

Thank you to the 2010 riders and donors

We would like to thank you for supporting the Tampa Interbay Rotary Club’s First Annual Cycling Out Autism event. In addition, we would like to share the details of the success of the fund-raising effort and how the monies will be used.

The event was held on March 27, 2010 and was a huge success! Thirty-seven riders came out and completed their commitment of 25 or 50 miles respectively. Thankfully the weather cooperated as the riders completed their journey through Starkey Wilderness Park and along the Suncoast Parkway. More than a dozen volunteers provided support for the riders throughout the day.

Thanks to your generosity, the event raised over b>$14,000 – exceeding our first year goal! Dr. Raymond Miltenberger, director of the Applied Behavioral Analysis program at USF, addressed the group and confirmed that the funds will be used to provide Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) services to autistic children and their families. ABA services help children with autism learn important skills to enable them to overcome their disability and lead more normal lives. ABA is typically provided in the child’s home and is the one approach that has proven to help children develop skills and limit the problem behaviors that often interfere with their development.

Next year’s event has already been scheduled for Saturday, March 26th, 2011. The goal is to raise $25,000 and we hope we can count on your support again next year. We invite you to attend the event as a rider, volunteer, or supporter.

Thank you again for supporting the fight against autism, a disability that is estimated to affect one in 150 children in our society. Sincerely,

Fred Wallrapp
President 2009-2010

Why autism?

Recently Interbay Rotary club made the decision to support autism with the focus on Children. Autism is a widespread illness with 1 in 150 childern being diagnosed with this illness - outpacing cancer, diabetes and aids combined. And there is no cure. It costs our nation over 35 billion dollars every year and receives less than 5% - yes 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases; for example Leukemia, and muscular dystrophy.

Our goal is to make this an annual event and we aim to raise ... twenty-five thousand dollars in the second year. $25,000.

The funds will be donated to the Applied Behavior Analysis Department at USF to assist them in providing ABA services to the children and families who need them, but who cannot afford them.

Who's organizing?
